IMPERIAL CITIES AND DESERT TOUR – 11DAYS
Day 1: Arrive Casablanca – transfer to Rabat
Arrive Casablanca and transfer to Rabat via the motorway, a journey of approximately 1 hour. Rabat is the administrative capital of Morocco. On arrival check-in to your hotel for the night.
Day 2: Rabat – Fes
After an early breakfast, check-out and visit the Tour Hassan monument, the Mausoleum of the late King Hassan and his father King Mohamed V before driving by motorway to the Imperial city of Meknes, once the capital of Morocco during the reign of the revered tyrant Moulay Ismail. Stop for a picnic lunch prepared by Hotel Tour Hassan en route. A local guide will join you to discover Meknes, Volubilis and Moulay Idris. Continue to the well-preserved Roman ruins of Volubilis dating back to the 1st and 2nd centuries, and Moulay Idris before arriving in Fes, the oldest cultural and spiritual imperial city of Morocco, founded in 789 B.C by Moulay Idriss II in the late afternoon. Check into your Raid.
Day 3: Fes
After breakfast your private guide and driver take you to explore Fez Nouvelle with its museums and Royal Palace, then a walk through the UNESCO world-heritage Medina. You will walk by the Medersas and Karaouyine University, which has existed for the past 1000 years, and see craftsmen working in the narrow lanes much as they done for centuries, stopping at one of the Carpet Palaces to learn about all the different types of carpets made in Morocco while sipping a glass of traditional mint tea. Return to your riad for lunch and to relax. After lunch continue your exploration of the Medina or enjoy the Spa and Hammam.
Day 4: Fes – Erfoud
Depart early this morning for the drive through the mid Atlas to the Sahara visiting Ifrane, known as “the Switzerland of Morocco”, the handicraft centre of Azrou, the Franciscan nunnery at Kasbah Myriem. Your driver will suggest a suitable stop for lunch en-route, possibly at Midelt. You will arrive in Erfoud in the late afternoon
Day 5: Bivouac – Merzouga Dunes
This morning visit the nearby town of Rissani and then return to spend the rest of the day relaxing by the pool at the Kasbah, before setting off for the desert in time to see the sunset, and for your night under the stars in your own private bivouac (double tent) with dinner by the fire. In the morning you will be woken early to ride your camels to watch the spectacular sun rise over the dunes.
Day 6: Marrakech – Skoura
Return to the main Kasbah where there will be time to shower and change before leaving for Skoura. You will be passing through the Todra and Dades Gorges, where the scenery is really spectacular. Lunch at Chez Michel, before continuing to the palm groves of Skoura.
Day 7: Skoura – Marrrakech
After leaving Skoura, stop at Ouarzazate, known as the Hollywood of Morocco where films such as Gladiator and Babel were made. The journey from here to Marrakech takes 4 hours over the Atlas Mountains with superb landscapes on all sides. Your driver will suggest a suitable stop for lunch en route. Arrive in Marrakech in the late afternoon and check into the luxury hotel/riad, La Maison Arabe, located in the medina but with vehicle access almost to the door. Take an evening stroll to the Djemaa-el-Fna Square to see the jugglers, story tellers, snake charmers, acrobats and vendors performing at sunset much as they have done for centuries.
Day 8: Marrakech Sightseeing
Tour Marrakech today with your guide to discover all the delights this romantic city can offer. First visit the Bahia Palace, located in the Jewish quarter known at the Mellah, the new Marrakech Museum, the Bahia Palace, the Palais Badi, the Agdal Gardens and the Dar Si Said Museum of Moroccan Art, the Saadien Tombs in the Kasbah, and on to the Medina and Souks. As you walk through the souks you will see everything from exquisitely embroidered shoes and belts to every type of spice, woodwork, brass and copper-work, kaftans ranging from the expensive to the very expensive – all enhanced by the smiles of the shop owners. An afternoon at leisure, or you can take an optional shopping tour accompanied by Carol Prior, a perfect opportunity to take advantage of the insider knowledge of a local resident (additional cost).
Day 9: A day at leisure or a day in the Atlas Mountains
Today choose to spend a day at leisure in Marrakech or spend the day exploring the areas surrounding Marrakech. Leave Marrakech this morning for an hour’s drive (64 kms) to the Berber village of Imlil, where you will meet your mountain guide with mules that you can ride up the mountain and around the village. Alternatively, spend the day in the Ourika Valley, at the foot of the Atlas, with its beautiful waterfalls and where you can try a goat tajine for lunch. Return to Marrakech in the late afternoon. Dinner own arrangements. There are so many great restaurants in Marrakech and your driver will be able to recommend and make reservations if desired.
Day 10: Marrakech
Drive to your cookery class, a short distance from Marrakech, perched on a hilltop surrounded by across of olive groves. Their outdoor cookery school is situated in the middle of the organic herb and vegetable garden. Each class begins with a short talk on what you would like to cook, you will be taken on a short tour of the garden to familiarise you with the vegetables and herbs used in Moroccan cooking. The cooking class concludes with lunch and a glass of wine relaxing beside the pool in this beautiful property. Return to Marrakech in the afternoon.
Day 11: Marrakech
Your final day in Marrakech and we suggest visiting Les Jardins Marjorelle (perhaps by calèche) the colourful gardens full of cacti and other exotic plants which were restored by the late Yves Saint Laurent and where he wished his ashes to be scattered adjacent to the villa where he spent much of his leisure time. Rest of the day at leisure with your car and driver at your disposal. This evening we include a “farewell to Morocco” dinner at the famous and exotic Restaurant Yacout in the heart of the Medina with superb views over the rooftops of Marrakech, and famed not only for the cuisine but the Interior Design. |
